Gfinger snap art1/30/2024 Hopkin: If you’ve ever seen a chimp snap, please let Bhamla know. Maybe it was described in some journal somewhere by a naturalist. Hopkin: He’s even gone back to the movies.īhamla: What if I saw, in Planet of the Apes, these apes sitting on top of a horse and snapping? Well that would be okay for me because somebody at least imagined it, right? Maybe they did their homework. Or can other primates do it, too?īhamla: I have written so many e-mails to so many anthropologists, zookeepers. Hopkin: Bhamla wonders whether there’s also something special about the shape of our hands that gives us this ability. If you have these rigid surfaces, although the friction is the same as the skin, not being able to compress affects the grip and storage of energy, so you get a very weak, or not really a satisfactory, snap. Hopkin: But that also squelched the snap because you waste too much of the stored energy trying to get your fingers to slide past each other.īhamla: And so it turns out that, in our experiments, we find that the skin friction is kind of this optimal sweet spot in this Goldilocks zone that gives you enough energy but also detaches quickly to give you the snap .īhamla: If you put copper thimbles, which we did to test the Thanos hypothesis, turns out that the compressibility of the finger pads is important as well. Let’s put some high-friction rubber pads”-thinking, “If I increase the friction, I’m going to get a louder snap perhaps.” So then they went the other way.īhamla: Counterintuitively, we thought, “Oh, friction is great. And they found the resulting snaps were not so snappy. First, Raghav and his grad student mentor Elio Challita used some moisturizer to make their fingers a little more slippery. Hopkin: To find out, they started to fiddle with friction. So that kind of led to this question: How are we able to perform this seemingly extraordinary feat of acrobatics and human dexterity? And we’re about almost three times in acceleration faster. So we’re no professional athletes we barely go to the gym. Hopkin: Even more impressive than its speed was its acceleration, which was three times faster than the throwing arm of a big-league baseball pitcher.īhamla: So here we have a snap done by scientists. A blink of an eye is glacially slow: it’s like about 150 milliseconds. To put that into context, that’s 20 times faster than the blink of an eye. Hopkin: Because the first thing they wanted to know was: Just how fast is this jazzy hepcat gesture?īhamla: We discovered that the finger snap takes about seven milliseconds. So Raghav Acharya, a student in Bhamla’s lab, set up an experiment.īhamla: He put some reflective dots on his fingers so he could automatically track the finger movement when you take a side view video with a high-speed camera-just to be able to extract out the velocities and accelerations. Hopkin: Energy that then has to get quickly released if you really want to snap. But something about the scene left Bhamla scratching his head.īhamla: And I said, “You know what? I’m willing to make a bet that if you had metallic gauntlets like Thanos has, I would suspect that it’s actually very difficult to store energy in a controllable way.” In the climax of this Avengers flick, supervillain Thanos forever alters the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a snap of his massive, metal-clad fingers. Hopkin: A couple years back, their talk turned to the movie Infinity Wars. And in this, we’ll talk about something typically nonscientific just to kind of defuse the situation after a typically intense scientific discussion that a student presents. ![]() But their lab meetings include time to be a bit more playful.īhamla: We have something called Super Happy Fun Time. īhamla’s lab at Georgia Tech focuses on ultrafast motion in nature.īhamla: Organisms can achieve really, really fast motions, and we are curious about how they’re able to do this and how we may extract those principles for perhaps synthetic systems. Their work appears in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. They found that the right amount of friction is key to a successful snap. Hopkin: That’s because Saad Bhamla and his students just wrapped up a study of the physics of finger snapping. Saad Bhamla: This is one of those examples that we joke that we can snap our fingers and get data. ![]() At least, that’s the way it usually works. It takes an enormous amount of time and energy to collect and analyze data. I’m Karen Hopkin.ĭoing science isn’t easy. Karen Hopkin: This is Scientific American’s 60-Second Science.

Gord downie family life1/29/2024 “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” are among the best known. Since The Tragically Hip’s first album in 1987, the band has provided a soundtrack for the lives of many Canadians. I hope they’ll learn about and remember Gord Downie for all they ways he both entertained and challenged Canadians.TORONTO – Gord Downie, who made himself part of Canada’s national identity with songs about hockey and small towns as lead singer and songwriter of iconic rock band The Tragically Hip, has died at age 53 after a battle with brain cancer.Ī statement on the band’s website said he died Tuesday night “with his beloved children and family close by.” The statement did not give a cause of death, though he had been diagnosed earlier with brain cancer. Even if they don’t share their mother’s musical taste, I hope they will see the band for all the ways that they celebrated Canada. When my boys are old enough, I will play the Tragically Hip’s music for them. ![]() In his later years, Downie used his celebrity to focus attention to Indigenous rights, forcing Canadians to confront issues long overlooked like the long-lasting devastation of the Residential School System and the current state of many First Nations communities living in the North.īut the gift of his artistry and activism will always remain. Not just for what it meant for the Canadian music scene but for him as a husband and father. When I first heard of his terminal brain cancer diagnosis, I was gutted. The only indication that he was a celebrity was that he made his way to the first class car while I travelled in coach. We were both boarding a train heading to Toronto. I saw Gord Downie a few times… the last time at the Via Station. Sometimes I would see the other guys from the band pulling into his driveway. No glitz or glamour, just a pretty house in the heart of the Queen’s student housing area. Rob or Bobbie Baker as he was known then, was my neighbour. They made up the day-to-day fabric of life for me in Kingston. Regretfully, I never got to see The Hip live, but in a sense, I didn’t have to. I feel lucky to have been going through this transition at the same time that Canadian bands were also transitioning to writing music about their home country and not being apologetic about it. There is no doubt that The Hip were right there with me as I matured from a naive teen to a young woman. Others I had read about in textbooks like French explorer Jacques Cartier or the wrongly convicted prisoner David Milgaard but never had I heard them sung about in contemporary music. With that album, I was introduced to Canadians that I’d never heard of like Leafs’ defenseman Bill Barilko and Nova Scotian author Hugh MacLennan. At keg parties, homecoming events and throughout the halls of almost all the residences I visited, those 12 songs were as much a part of campus life as lecture halls and meal plans.Įven now, 24 years later, when I hear songs such as Looking for a Place to Happen or Pigeon Camera, I can instantly feel the cold crisp air of that first Autumn or visualize the grey skies and blinding white snow of a Kingston winter. I heard it all throughout that week and in the many months to come. ![]() ![]() I don’t know who said it, but they proved to be very wise. One of the things I remember hearing among the songs and chants of Frosh Week was “You can’t live in Kingston and not be a fan of the Hip.” In the fall of 1993, I moved to Kingston to start a five-year stint in my new home as a Queen’s University student. I bought my first album by a Canadian artist with the release of Blue Rodeo’s Lost Together and I never really looked back. I loved a good dance song and a ballad even more. I left home to start university, voted in my first major election and became a fan of The Tragically Hip.Īs a teenager growing up in Hamilton in the late 80s and early 90s, I listened to pop music and drew hearts around the faces of guys from my favourite boy bands.

Harry potter on a broomstick1/29/2024 ![]() The title may be a reference to the real-world Which? Magazine. The flying broomstick is a magical item with built-in charms. The editor of this magazine provided an endorsement for Quidditch Through the Ages. A flying broomstick is not simply a normal broomstick pressed into service as a mode of transportation. The issue in question contained an article comparing various makes of broomstick, including the Firebolt, which Huntingdon deemed "interesting". ![]() The Nimbus 2000 has a hand-carved wooden handle and fully varnished beech, and will truly make the centerpiece of your Harry Potter collection. Each broom is numbered and includes an authenticity metal plate. During his third year, his Nimbus 2000 gets destroyed when he gets attacked by a Dementor and falls off his broom in a match against Hufflepuff. Later in his first year, Minerva McGonagall sent him a Nimbus 2000 after he became part of Gryffindor Quidditch Team. ![]() Later on the voyage, he traded that issue to Jason Huntingdon to get back a pair of Spectrespecs he had stolen from Luna Lovegood. Limited edition and premium reproduction of brooms seen in the Harry Potter film series. Harry started using the average school broomstick. On the Hogwarts Express in 1996, Harry Potter traded three Chocolate Frog Cards to Karl Limpley for the latest issue of Which Broomstick?. The toy was a vibrating replica of the broom Harry Potter uses to uphold Gryffindor’s status as Quidditch champions, according to an article in The New York Times written the same month. In the summer of 1995, Ron Weasley quoted Which Broomstick regarding the speed of the Comet 260 while praising the capabilities of the Cleansweep Eleven he received as a present for becoming a Gryffindor prefect. First was an incident concerning a Mattel Toy released in February 2001 called the Nimbus 2000. Later, as Harry was riding his Firebolt at the second Quidditch of the season, Lee Jordan noted that the Firebolt was the broomstick of choice for the Quidditch World Cup, according to this magazine. Taking in the turrets from 360 degrees, zooming through the bridge Neville Longbottom eventually blows up, discovering the owlery and the boathouse and courtyards in VR all on a broomstick. He later recommended that Harry order a new broomstick using an order form that can be found in the back of this magazine. I've spent a good 20 minutes trying to get back on a broomstick with Scabbers, with no success. In 1993, Oliver Wood allowed Harry Potter to borrow it, to find a replacement for his destroyed Nimbus 2000. The Nimbus 2000 was Harry Potters ride-on of choice when it came to dodging. However, after hopping off of the broomstick, I wasn't able to get back on it with Scabbers. The envy of every Quidditch player is this go-faster wizard broom stick. I thought this was an intentional feature the developers put in so that both players could fly a broomstick with full control, rather than one player being stuck on the ground while the other controls Harry. If you were to only complete main story line quests, you would find these quests fairly early on. While the broomstick moved, Scabbers would continuously play his running animation. To unlock the broom in Hogwarts Legacy, complete the main story quest Flying Class. The earliest known evidence of a broomstick enchanted to fly dates to 962 AD brooms are thought to have been chosen because they are easily transported and. Like Harry, Scabbers was able to fly the broomstick with full control, though of course he couldn't use a wand. While mashing buttons, I somehow ended up mounted on a broomstick with Scabbers. In the courtyard where you are first introduced to broomstick flying, I was running around on the ground with Scabbers trying to figure out how to dig in the special patches of soil (it turns out that Scabbers can't do this).
